How To Do Your Best When You Don’t Feel The Best

how to do your best when you dont feel the best

I can say that regardless of how good im not feeling, i’m doing the best i can.

Can all the other mamas and/or empathetic people out there agree with me that the energy out there is really hard to deal with right now? In general, i would say that i normally handle anxiety fairly well. This week, not so much.

I’m sure its not just an empathetic thing or a mama thing right now, but i am really feeling for everyone else out there, too.

We’ve all gotta be feeling the weirdness in the air by now. There is so much more than just the virus that we are left to worry about and its been really overwhelming figuring out how to process everything that’s going on in the world right now.

There are so many emotions i have been feeling about it.

Figuring out how to explain all the chaos to our children has been really stressful as it is. Instead, we’ve been clinging tight to the fact that we all get extra time together & focusing on new ways we can distract ourselves from the media and electronics & spending more time together as a family. Trying to make the best of it.

I have already been spending so much time over the last year or so doing the work to heal from my past, so lately i have been really focused on our future. & now this situation just brings a brand new opportunity to focus more on the present.

So, on the positive side, i’ll be able to add what im currently learning to my tool kit for a later time. (anxiety always comes back)

How To Do Your Best When You Don’t Feel Your Best

I understand and respect how you may feel about everything shutting down and everyone isolating themselves. However, this creates a great opportunity to truly spend some time with ourselves and those in our family. Take care of yourself by nurturing your mental, physical, and spiritual health.

Spend some time meditating, get outside and go for a quick walk or jog, and maybe write in your journal. Whatever you can do to ease the stress you may be feeling, i encourage you to do it. You cannot pour from a place of emptiness so fill your cup.

Your calm presence will without a doubt effect those around you in a positive way. Be the light you wish to see in your home:)

  • Take account for what you can and can’t control.

You may be just as tired as me about all the negativity there is out there right now. Sometimes, myself included, we forget that we are only really in control of ourselves and our attitude.

We forget that we cant control how anyone else is feeling and dealing with things in their world. This is the time to make a list of the things that you absolutely can take control of, including your anxiety, and making a plan on how to tackle it. Just getting to the point of awareness here is key.

  • Limit your social media.

Take a break whenever you feel the need to, but my advice is to not use it as a means to just keep your mind busy.

Excessive use of social media can be a trigger when struggling with anxiety and/or depression. Plus, social media is flooded with so much fear right now. There are so many tools out there that are to our availability to help keep us busy. Spend some time reading a book, getting in touch with your creative side, or maybe learn a new language. Refer to Step 1. whenever necessary.

  • Stay connected.

Don’t let fear dictate how your days go. We can rise above this all if we choose to stay positive and in community with one another.

We may not be able to physically be there for one another, but we can pick up our phones, tablets, computers, etc. and call/video chat the ones we love and think of. It’s good to check in on one another during times like this when we become hyper focused on our own current situation.

Get creative and think of new ways to help your community. Remember that we are all in this together and the majority of us have some sort of fear trying to attack us. Staying in touch with one another and doing what we can to still show compassion stretches a long way during times like these.

  • Do what works best for you & your family.

That saying will continue to ring true that what works great for others may not work so great for you. And it’s OK! That’s why its so important to trust your guts, your intuition, and to trust God.

Having faith gets easier when you feel like you are doing what you feel called to do. & for most of us that looks way different from one another. If your family does better in a routine, create a new routine your entire family can take part in every day.

But, if you’re sick of the routines everyday and looking froward to not doing a whole lot, hey, that is OK too. Don’t let what others are doing or saying keep you from doing what you think is best. Do what works best for you & your family!

  • Release Tension : Set Intention

I learned this a couple of years ago when reading my High Performance Habits book from Brendon Burchard. He talks about before moving on from one activity to the next, take 60 seconds to close your eyes and take deep breaths while repeating “release, release, release” until your body feels calmer and your mind feels more clear.

Then, set an intention about what you want to think and feel in the next thing that you do. This really helps in the moments when you are not feeling well and need something to take immediate effect.

  • Give yourself some grace.

Motherhood is hard enough. & we are always our own worst critic and often we are the first ones to beat ourselves down when something doesn’t go right. Giving yourself love, attention, and grace is so important for your mind, body, and soul.

I understand that its easier said than done to focus on a lot of these things; but i want to encourage you to still do them because it really does help.

This morning i took a walk outside of my house just to get a break from all the noise that was starting to really get to me.

While i left my house with a sense of frustration, i took a few deep breaths of fresh air and i quickly remembered that i was in control of everything i was feeling in that moment. And i felt a sense of peace overcome me.

All it takes sometimes is just a few minutes of quiet space to think clearly. And other times it may take a whole lot more. None of us are in this thing alone though, that’s for sure. So lets start treating ourselves and each other that way.

Grace, grace!! XO
